Both globes are different, which shows that Rare just scribbled up an Earth globe because they didn't think anyone would bother to look this close.

How can you tell that they aren't just two sides of the same, identical globe? That would make more sense, even as an artistic shortcut.

Cyclone: Please, scan that guide in if you can! Something that hard to find must be preserved on the internets. I know it would take some time, but heck, make it a project. We might even find more interesting background tidbits within. Either way, it would be awesome to see.

Sooner or later I will scan more stuff in. That particular guide only has 3 useful rarware renders, so it would be pointless to scan the entire thing in unless someone here can read Japanese.

Interestingly, the 'continents' present on the world globe(s) don't look much at all like a likeness to our Earth's terrain. This suggests to me that the Kongs aren't supposed to be living on Earth - at least not our Earth. That or the cartographers of DK Isle/Crocodile Isle aren't doing their job all too well.

Certainly the latter, considering you can see Australia on the Kongs' planet in the ending to Jungle Climber and Japan in Barrel Blast/Jet Race's Cosmic Highway.

I suppose the Kong/Kremling cartographers who were responsible for these globes never travelled much farther than Rare's cartoon animal archipelago. They only drew what they knew, much like the people in the early Middle Ages who depicted Earth with a much shorter, less pointy Africa and without America.

Maybe the door is bashed in in the PAL version, because by the time they redisigned the background, they thought: "How logical is it for K. Rool to actually allow 2 monkeys to enter to his Flying Krock and to actually not carying?" Like, throwing a TNT barrel to the door and breaking it is much more logical than just entering your worst enemy hide and closing the door in my opinion =P

Hello!

I am a brazillian fan of Donkey Kong series!

I had make a translation of this topic in a Brazillian Game Forum

DK's tree house is different in DKC and DKC3 for GBA. Candy's picture is blurry it’s there in the first one. Some books on the floor, a beach ball, tires, and a picture with words on it are visible. In the next picture the picture is still there as well as the banana bunch in the last picture and the beach ball. The bed is different and the picture of Candy has been replaced by a tire swing.
In Funky's flights there are shark jaws mounted on the wall a fish above the window, an engine in the foreground and some lifesavers on the wall. A bi-plane is hanging from the ceiling. In Cranky's cabin the TV is a bit busted, there is a wolf's head mounted on the wall, a Nintendo logo in the background. There’s a mine cart in the foreground and a lantern hanging on the wall.

Is that Mumbo Jumbo's mask in the foreground too? :| Because that's what it looks like to me.

Yup, that is definitely Mumbo's mask in there. In fact, that room has many Rare references. You can see Sabreman's hat on top of some barrels in the background and the wolf's head looks like...Sabrewulf from KI?

Rattly's crate is at the end of one of the DKC3 tree levels. Barrel Shield Bust-up I think.
Also, is that Parry's crate in the corner of the Krockship? (Actually it looks more like a chicken...)

There it is, at the end of Barrel Shield Bust-up. You have to move the flag.
Also somewhat interesting is the sack of coffee visible BEFORE you lift the flag:

I think there are un-grabbable bananas all over the tree levels though. The Rattly crate and coffee sack can only be seen in that one place: the end of Barrel Shield Bust-Up.
Unless they're in Swoopy Salvo too... I'll play through that level again and edit in whatever I find.

I dunno, the picture is kinda crappy, so it could say 'tea' or it could be Rattly's tail. You can't actually see a t, just something that looks like ea.

New picture, from the end of Swoopy Salvo. The whole crate is visible!
I still think that 'T' is dodgy... there's a fairly large gap between the T and the E, much larger than the E -> A one.
Then again it doesn't look like Rattly either... I remembered his crate looking like the one in the tree, but I looked at a sprite sheet and... it doesn't.
http://www.spriters-resource.com/snes/dkc2/sheet/11600
So, is it a 'Tea Crate,' or is it a 'Random Squiggle Crate?'

EDIT: It's starting to look more like "DEA" now... :|

EDIT AGAIN: And now the Kongs are out of the way we can see the coffee sack only says 'Coff.' So I guess it is tea after all...
Pity, Rattly is so much more interesting than tea...

In the foreground, a beachball (Wherever Funky is, theres always a beachball!), and a box of tools. On the shelves, a globe,
some more unobtainable bananas, and on the shelf on the floor a life preserver. On the wall, a shark's jaw, and a telephone. On the floor, a tool box. I see he has a stove and some sort of drum.

I'm not sure if this has already been said, has anyone noticed that Engaurde is in the tank in Monkey Museum in the istructions booklet but Winky in the game?
And on those crates, its definatly Tea and Coffee. Why can't monkeys treat themselves to a nice cup of joe?

Massive bump to say that I've pinpointed more strangeness in DKC's backgrounds, in both the SNES and GBA versions!

For the original version, look at the second part of Kongo Jungle's map.
kongojungle_map2.png

Notice anything unusual around Funky's Flights?
That barrel doesn't look like a jumbo jet to me...

kongojungle_map2cutaway.png
kongojungle_map2cutaway.png (61.7 KiB) Viewed 150190 times
...but it does have wings!
Could this be an early design that they forgot to replace? Perhaps Rare just left it in as an easter egg.

For the GBA port, look at the background of the screen where you given the objective of a bonus area.
It's just the SNES version's map of Donkey Kong Island, reduced in size and with a sepia tone applied, right?

Wrong.
dkisland_gbabg.png

dkisland_snes.png
dkisland_snes.png (47.46 KiB) Viewed 150190 times

There's two differences here:
  1. The most obvious one: The scroll at the top left of the image reads "Donkey Kong's Island" instead of "Donkey Kong Country."
  2. The most shocking one: The smokestacks are in the forest instead of on top of the building! Because of this, there's a clearer view of the tip of "DK's hair".

This opens up another question. What is that building on DK's forehead? It looks nothing like the factories that appear in the Kremkroc Industries map, and for a good reason--It's not a factory, but a temple! I can clearly see steps and four columns along the front of it.

A screenshot of this old map appears in Electronic Gaming Monthly Volume 61, which Retromags has scans of:

I don't know if this one is accurate or not, and I don't have the picture right now (I'll have to post it later from a different computer). In the DKC2 title screen, there's something that looks like the patch you give to Funky in DKC3. It is probably just two bananas, but it looks like the patch to me. It's right in the center of the treasure chest, between the two banana coins.

Okay, referring to the previous few pictures, here's some interesting things I've just come across...

Image

At the very bottom, is that the sail belonging to the Gangplank Galleon? It looks like it belongs to a ship of some sort, but the ship normally is positioned in the far background in the finsihed version in the SNES, unless this is a beta picture.

Image

Looking at those flasks, they have some purple and light blue contents in them. Maybe the same stuff K. Rool uses? Did he learn to make potions at the Kong Kollege? Sounds reasonable after all, the Kaptain is a student of Wrinkly's.

Something else I've noticed is that Rare kept reusing the same MODE7 fog layer in all three games to represent something else.

For Instance:
