I think the idea of a pirate map works better than a scroll.

Yes definitely. I just liked the rolled up edges of the paper in those 'scroll' examples. As long as the map in the background of the avatar is not disctracting it should be ok I think. Someone care to give it a try? All I got access to right now is lame MS Paint...

Don't double post. If you have something more to add, just edit it into the post you made earlier.

As for your design, the idea is that they aren't supposed to made from any pre-existing screenshots, ie. done by hand.

Sorry I should have explained myself a little better. Those images I posted are just examples of the kind of thing I was thinking might work, using maps as the main theme for the avatars. Just design an outline for a simple old style map from scratch and overlay a DKC character or whatever on top after changing it up a bit (so it's not identicle to the original image). I was thinking the 'overworld' images for each game could be turned into a map for the background of the avatars to look similer to that pirate map from DKC2 in the link I posted ealier.

Agreed; this isn't quite what we're after (for the reasons mentioned), but it's a good quality editing job, and a nice piece of visual brainstorming. I'm thinking of doing a 'polaroid' style background for the avatars to be displayed on (kind of like how the screenshots on the 'At a glance' panels look, on the level info pages), so let's concentrate on creating original artistic representations of the characters/objects/scenes themselves, rather than worrying about the border/background.

What i think would be really artistic is having the Avatars drawn realisticly or however you want, it doesn't have to be perfect but you can try your hardest to make it become popular.
