According to an illustration from a Nintendo-licensed novel, the hoard was brought back to the cave in mine carts. I need to scan this page along with the accompanying text.

He's why the hoard was taken again in Donkey Kong Land, so I believe it. Cranky also shows up after each boss in the GBA port as well.
