VG Music in Unusual Places (AKA "Trucks & Mario themes")

Damn, just a few minutes ago there was a truck in our street to collect scrap metal.
And the driver had nothing better to do than listening loud to the NES Super Mario theme while driving!
I first thought that a internet site played that song in the background :)
Wish I had my digital camera at hand in that moment :D

Heh, it's a pretty popular and iconic oldschool track... I must say I'd have been rather surprised to hear it blaring from a scrap metal collection truck, though. ;)

I might be wrong, but this topic seems a bit limited in usefulness... :P We should maybe make it a 'VG music in unusual places' thread.

I agree, how many people are going to hear the Mario theme from a truck? We should definately expand the focus of this thread.

To be fair, I had a dream a few months back that the Waluigi Pinball theme was playing from someone's truck. Strangely the truck was running it full blast for four days straight (don't remember how I figured that out...).

Might have been a dream, but a strange one at that!

'VG music in unusual places' sounds good and you're right, it would really improve this threads usefullness :)

I don't know if the trucker had some sort of trigger for the music, because he often played just the first 6 notes 3 times consecutively.

Another option would be that this is an electric horn sound, but that' wouldn't be legally in germany ;)

Stone, I believe there's a pretty retro-faithful remix of that SMB 1-1 music which (as you hinted at) loops the song's first notes three times at the beginning... I'll see if I can turn up a link for you.

...and Cody, I wish I got as many VG/DKC related dreams as you. :P

I just (a couple of hours ago) heard a track on the radio (Triple J) which was a remix by an Aussie fellow called Nick Thayer. The remix instrumentals are pretty much entirely Super Mario Bros. sound effects.

I made a recording of it on my phone, which is dreadful quality, but oh well...

I couldn't find any mention of this new mix anywhere on the net, so I guess this is a pretty exclusive recording. :P

Hi 5's for listening to Triple J and not any of the other rubbish Australian stations. ^_^

My highschool's bands have performed video game music a few times in the past. Shame the Mario theme tune is the only one that practically everyone can identify with.

Which means we can play DKC covers in peace now. :D

I don't get Triple J where I live. D:

A few weeks ago I was standing at the checkout in my local pharmacy, and I could swear this 60-70 year old man behind me was whistling Click Clock Wood to himself.

Hmm.

^ that's really strange. When I was in Best Buy about a week ago, I could have sworn I heard/saw someone whistling Jinjo Village. I started to whistle it as well hoping that person would recognize it, but I don't think she did.

Then again, I don't think attractive girls my age have even heard Jinjo Village in their life

Eveytime I buy something at a gas station, when the cashier rings the price up, instead of the usual "ding", the ring sound from Sonic plays.

VG musicians busking

Postby Qyzbud » February 28th, 2009, 2:35 pm

Last night when I was in town, I heard some Super Mario World music being played by a couple of buskers on keyboard/drums. My mate and I stopped to listen, and when they finished the track (SMW's first level theme) I decided to request some DKC music... He hadn't heard any DKC music in years, but I was very impressed by a few tunes he managed to come up with, from DKC2. He did a great job with K. Rool Returns (DKC2's main theme/intro), and also gave Welcome to Crocodile Isle (map screen), Jib Jig (rigging) and Crocodile Cacophony (K.Rool Duel) a go.

It was great to hear, and I was very impressed! I could post a recording of his efforts which I recorded on my phone, if anyone's keen to listen. ;)

Edit: here's a brief snippet of the performance...

Hahaha, that's rockin'!

I can play Welcome to Crocodile Isle and Saria's Song on guitar. I was proud of Saria's Song because I tabbed alot of it myself.

Okay guys, I've uploaded a brief recording of the busking performance. That recording (same link as the one I just edited into my previous post) is just part of what they played, but I'll provide the full recording when I get a chance.

Rodent, we ought to do some busking sometime when we're Flinders Uni slackers!

...of course I'll need to take up an instrument...

That's pretty awesome for an on-the-spot request. We could top that though. :D

You can learn to sing maybe... or keyboards or tambourine...
