Talk about the original Donkey Kong Country for SNES and VC.
The ports can be discussed in the DKC Ports (GBC, GBA) subforum.

How long did it take you to beat this game?

Postby CaptainEddie » July 12th, 2008, 4:52 am

Okay, so there was alredy a topic for this in DK64, but due to the fact that I JUST BEAT THE GAME FOR THE FIRST TIME, I decided to make this topic.
allow mw to explain. Back in 1995 (maybe 96) my dad let my uncle borrow DKC. Well, overnight it got stolen from my uncle. I never saw it again. Until...it came out on the VC in the US about a year and a half ago. So, after a year and a half of jumping, swimming, gliding, charging, exploring, and, most of all, collecting, I have finally beat this game!

How long did it take you guys (or girls) to beat DKC?

mhhh, probably something about 6 months, or even longer. I was very unexperienced back then with DK...
The problem was: I wasn't able to save the game the first three months.
The reason: I always lost all my lives in Barrel Cannon Canyon.
When I finally did this level (thanks to the shortcut, I was too bad to beat the last blasting sequence) it went on faster, with a longer visitation of Gorilla Glacier and of course the Chimp Caverns (Platform Perils ;) )

Long long ago that was...

Well, I got stuck in Gorilla Glacier for a while so I stopped plaing. Then, like last week, I got past it. It took me a few days to get past Kremkrock Ind. and I breezed right through Chimp Caverns. Except Platform Perils, that took a few tries. ;)

Yeah, I thought, "It's the first world, wouldn't it be best to put the save spot after Reptile Rumble or something?", also when I was little, I had a 2-player contest with my dad, and I was stuck on Barrel Cannon Canyon, while he made it to Kremkrock Inc..

DKC was the last game in the trilogy I got to play. As to be expected it's much easier then the other two.

One-three weeks do to a short attention span, and I remember running into trouble in the snow levels as well.

EDIT: Sorry, thought we were talking about DK64 for some reason.

I can't remember, but it was years ago.

Do you really want to know?
Well... *murmurs numbers and stuff*
About... 10 years...
Though my save file says I've played for 48 hours (I think it says that, I'll check later).

First time around: About a year. I was 4 years old, and I always got stuck on Gorilla Glacier(You have to beat like six hard levels before you can save).
Now: In one lazy afternoon. I still get stuck on Gorilla Glacier.

Actually, if it's 6 levels, then you are counting Cranky's Cabin as a level . Here's what places you go to before saving:

Snow Barrel Blast
Slipslide Ride
Ice Age Alley
Croctopus Chase
Cranky's Cabin (not really a level)
Torchlight Trouble

That makes 5 levels excluding Cranky's Cabin.

EDIT at 12:46 PM PST: By the way, when I was little, my dad and I were stuck on the Kremkrom Inc. levels, when we finally beat Elevator Antics, we saved, and I was stuck on Poison Pond for a couple weeks.

Yeah, that was the main reason I got stuck in Gorilla Glacier.

To just go through all the levels, it takes me about 2-2.5 hours. I decided to get 100% earlier this year and my time when I did was about 25 hours.

The GBA version took me about 3 days of on/off playing.

The GBC version took me about a week because of its difficulty.

The original SNES version (played on the Virtual Console) took me about a week as well, because I can never get used to playing SNES games with a Gamecube controller lol.

That's actually pretty good, considering my record is 0:36, which I have gotten pretty much 3 times in a row now  .

I've never tried a speed run, but when I'm doing a casual run it probably takes me a couple hours.

My first time took me little less than two weeks. My grandparents owned a giant van with a built in SNES. On a road trip to Canada (went north west, we live in Missouri) I got DKC, it was my first real game and I loved it, I had to have my mom help me with a lot of it, I remember having to stock pile on lives in Snow Barrel Blast at the beginning with the Winky gold statue. Now it takes me about one and a half hours to beat it not 100%, and I honestly have only 100% a few times so I don't know my time with that.

2.000, maybe 2.001. I was waitng my bro return of his school. I take my blanket and I begin the game. I beat the game after three, maybe four hours of no-break game. I was a eight-year-old child. When I beat, I saw a last way, linking Gang-Plank Galleon and DK's treehouse. I never see this way again.

GladiatorGr: Hey, that's pretty good. If I recall correctly the 101% TAS is 38 Minutes. ;)

It's been quite a while since I've actually played through DKC now, I'm too "rusty" at the controls (using save states and whatnot, development hacking, etc). I used to be really good at it back when I was playing on an actual SNES.

Um, if I recall correctly, my 101% save on the GBA version clocked in at sixteen hours.

I'm... quite the explorer.

About 1 or 2 years
Most of the time my older sister played the game. I remember the first time I saw King K. Rool. It happened after a long time from getting SNES. Each world was passed by a couple of months.

Huh, this is bumped, so I may as well comment.

Beating the original with any percentage? Not that long.

Although it took me several years to get to 101% (Really because I also play other games)

HOWEVER, I recently messed around with a Game Genie too much and lost my 101% save on my SNES DKC!
So I'm beating it all over again from memory.

In about two days, I got to Chimp Caverns, and I haven't forgotten a bonus stage location yet.

In GBC, considering the physics are a little wonky and I have to beat the game THREE TIMES, still haven't done it.
And GBA, I just got. Was able to get to Chimp Caverns with every bonus stage and KONG letter before that collected in one sitting.

The first time took me a week or two, second time took me a day or two, and now I could probably beat the game in just a few hours.

The first time i played it, it took me like 2 months, but it was because when i got my first Game Over screen i was very young and it scared me so much that i stopped playing it for a while

Now according to the in-game clock, i can beat the game in 3:16... Not bad, i guess.
