The title said it all...

Anyway, I like the old games.

First of all, YAY! A Sonic thread!

Next, yes, the old games were indeed fun.

I'm not sure if I enjoyed Sonic 1 as much as Sonic 2 and 3, but it's a fun game nonetheless. :D

Now, I'm not going to be like all those fangirls/fanboys who rant and rave about how "horrible" the 3d games are. Most people who say that stuff are just jumping on a bandwagon... :| The newer ones aren' t nearly as bad as many video game reviewers say.

HOWEVER, the newer games could have been better if the game developers just spent more time working on 'em...

Also, while there aren't really any Sonic characters I hate, some could be left out for awhile (i.e. Marine, Big, Storm, etc.)

With that being said, some characters are in need of more development/revamps (Amy doesn't have to be so ditzy, Knuckles doesn't have to be so foolish, Big desperately needs a Baloo the Bear personality....)

Now, while I like some of the "new" voices, some just need to be changed

Rouge - Does she have to sound like a 40 year old hooker?
Tails - When did he become a girl???
Vector - He sounds like that stupid Dinosaur from "Blues Room"

Hey, look at that! Notice how I didn't rant about Sonic's or Shadow's voice! That's because I truly believe that Jason Griffith has improved since he first started voicing them. Although I still wish with a passion that Ryan Drummond and David Humphery would come back, Jason is actually doing pretty good right now... His portrayal of Shadow is a tadwhispery for my tastes, but not as bad as in Sonic x.

One more thing, Shadow is not emo. Sure, some of the music in that game is emo- sounding, but he is not an emo character. He doesn't sit in a dark room all day listening to emo music or cut himself. In Shadow the Hedgehog, he was just trying to figure out his past. How would you feel if you didn't know your past and you could not trust anyone to tell you the truth because they would probably take advantage of you? Besides, at the end of the game, he didnt' dwell on all the stuff he'd just been through, he just chose to put his past behind him and move on. Emo people don't do that usually...

:o Whew! That was alot to say... sorry about that... Peace out

Lately other characters have taken a back seat to Sonic with Unleashed and Black Knight focusing mostly on him (Black Knight, the other 3 don't become playable until well into the last half). To me the problem is they totally ignore the cast and make new people to serve as the plot for that game then throw them out and make another cast for the next. It's gotten to where Sonic is the only person the player is familiar with and can latch on to.

With that being said, some characters are in need of more development/revamps

I agree, in the latest games the new cast that's likely just going to be thrown out anyway, are the only ones that have real character developments.

That out of the way, I liked Black Knight and thought it was a great game. I've only played the Wii version of Unleashed and it's good but I get annoyed with it when I here about the stuff that was cut from it, (Empire City, explorable overworlds) and that Tails and Amy feel over shadowed my Chip and Professor Pickle.

O noes nawt sawnik agin!

All I know is that the original games are difficult past the first few stages, and he makes an appearance in Brawl. I've got nothing to do this Summer, does anyone recommend any games?

I agree with FefeRawft, the older games are very hard at times, although the only old Sonic game I've played is the first. I'm considering downloading the second in VC, but is it almost the same as the first (does it at least have a saving feature?)?

The first Sonic game I played was Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, which was enjoyable (especially with Action Replay).

Sonic CD and Sonic 3 had a save features but not 2.

The first Sonic game I played was a collection of Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 3 & Knuckles for PC.

The water stages were always a nightmare.

A bum-bum-bump.

http://sonic.sega.jp/20th/

and the retro revival marches on!

There's not enough info out yet and, considering Sega's track record I'm not sure how this could turnout.

I'm cautiously optimistic. At the very least the trailer has piqued my interest, which both the Black Knight and the Colors reveal trailers failed to do.

Some more info plus new trailer.

Apparently looks like they're going with side scrolling with classic Sonic and 3D (Unleashed-Colors style) with modern Sonic. Sounds like an oxymoron to type up; but yeah.

I'd agree with you on the past game trailers. Considering the name, and that there wasn't much more then the music to go off of, The idea crossed my mind that Sonic Colors might of turned out to be a game in the vine of Mario Teaches Typing, or the old Mario Early Years series, at first. ^^x

Yeah, from what I can gather, the game will be made up of levels from Sonic's past remade and updated in both 2D AND 3D, meaning for instance Green Hill Zone is remade (and only slightly changed) for classic play, but also reimagined in 3D for modern Sonic to play through, and assumingly there will be 3D levels from Sonic's more popular 3D titles (Adventure (2), Unleashed, and Colors presumably) that will be remade for 2D as well.

Now I want to see the Casino level from the Genesis games and the pier level from Sonic Adventure.

The thought of an Adventure level reimagined for Unleashed mechanics would actually be a cool idea if Sega actually tries that.

"Three defining eras from 20 years of Sonic the Hedgehog video game history"

Up until now it's always been Pre-Adventure and Post-Adventure to my understanding. Guess this means Unleashed marked the beginning of it's own era.

:o :A SONIC THREAD?! In a Donkey Kong Country based forum?!

This forum just has no hope.

(just kidding)

Anyway, I've played some of the older Sonic games, and judging from the information gathered about the new game I might look into buying it. My brother also had this other 2-D Sonic game for DS which also switched to 3-D for the bosses. Finally, Brawl.

Yeah, the three "eras", from what I can gather, are most likely Genesis games, Adventure 1 and 2, and then Unleashed/Colors. I would imagine that most everything else will be ignored.

Yeah, Gamespot confirmed those are in fact the eras.

One of the Sonic Rush titles.

Also, it's the 'general gaming' side of the board what'd you expect? xD

Edit:

Another vid.
I'm going to start compiling links into my first post, about this game that is.
