Donkey, Diddy, Dixie... except of one all end with "y"?

Postby asmodeus » March 6th, 2009, 12:12 am

I've noticed that almost all the Kong's names end with a "y", and the only exception seem to be Dixie. Does anybody know why it is or does anybody have got a theory?

Some names:
Donkey, Diddy, Kiddy, Manky, Cranky, Candy, Funky, Tiny, Chunky, Lanky and Wrinkly.

EDIT: Forgot the important kong Wrinkly :D.

There's not much of a difference really.
If it was 'Dixy', you'd still pronounce it the same way. Dixie is just a proper name, that's all.

That's clear to me. Rare (Nintendo?) could have called here Dixy to have the "y" at the end, but they haven't. The question is why they haven't or why they haven't chosen another name with that letter at the end.

Well which sounds and looks better together?

Diddy Dixy

or

Diddy Dixie

I think the latter does. Also They both have 5 letters. The kong names in your first post all have 5 letters in the names with the execption of Donkey and Cranky which have 6, and Tiny which is the shortest name with only 4 letters which makes logical sense...

I also think Diddy Dixie looks much better, but maybe it's just because I got accostomed to it...

I was counting the letters from the names in the first post... Aren't they correct?

No problem Cyclone, your counting was alright, I just found it funny that you've written Crankey, which actually has 7 letters

Too much double posting! :P

I don't think it matters that much, because the name still ends with the same sound as everyone else.

haha I should know better then to post that late at night... ;) I corrected the typos. Mods delete my double post please, thanks.

Well it's not all on how the names sound. Sure the names sound the same even if they're spelt differently but there’s also the visual aspect of the names. Some words are easier to remember/read because of the way they look and the combination of the letters. It's interesting though that Donkey is the only name (I think) that is spelt with an "ey". On a creative point Rare seems to have put decent thought into the creation of the names.

The naming scheme probably has to do with alliteration. Of course, Dixie looks better and is easier to remember. Dixy seems more like a male name to me anyway, so it makes sense that they used "ie" instead.

Well, there's a really old show called Pixie and Dixie and Mr. Jinks where Pixie and Dixie were both male mice.
Dixie is already a name and like Simion says, it might have to do with alliteration. Just like how Kiddy is Dinky in Japan. Besides other names like Danny Kong or Dolly Kong wouldn't kind of fit =P

Probably because Dolly and Danny don't follow the name 'rules', as the name must —in most cases— have the 'k'-sound in there. Donkey, Dinky, Dixie, Cranky, Funky, Swanky, Wrinkly, Manky, Lanky, Chunky. An 'n' often precedes the 'k'.

They should have just named her "Minky" or "Minxy" or in keeping with the name beginning with "D", "Dotty", "Debby", "Dizzy" or just spelled her name "Dixxy"

Or they could have just given her a normal freaking name, one that actually exists and isn't a fragrant misspelling and abuse of the English language, that oh look, still has the y sound to it. Which they did. "Should have", ugh.

Ah, Sean. Classic.

But yes, Dixie is a real name that's actually been around for awhile. And why hasn't anyone mentioned the fact that Wrinkly's name has seven letters in it? Conspirators! :o

Indeed, Dixie is an actual name. It is also what most call the southern states. I don't know why it's not spelled with a 'y' nor as to why they NAMED her that but let's just say Nintendo and Rare do NOT let their games make ANY sense...

Here's my theory.

Maybe they wanted to have all the names have the long "e" at the end of all the names. Dixie's name probably ends with and "ie" instead of a "y" because "Dixy" would just look silly.

But that's my theory.
