It's a very interesting thing, if you press down a couple of times and rapidly, you can access music test, if you do more, cheat mode...
So there is the point, someone did found some of these codes? At the HEX code or somewhere? Just looks cool to play, hard maybe...

That's just a secret cheat, is all, hacking is actually tweaking the program. Cranky even gives it as a random hint somewhere, I think. Anyway, though, welcome.

Firstly, generally speaking I'm certain this was first discovered in 1995, seeing as that's when the game came out and I'd expect that at least one person will have probably discovered by the end of that year.
Anyway, when you get to cheat mode, the cheats are:
50 Lives - Y, A, Select, A, Down, Left, A, Down
Hard Mode (No Barrels) - B, A, Right, Right, A, Left, A, X

The cheat mode in DKC has more codes, I think. There are also cheat codes in DKC3.

Also, note that if you complete the game in Hard Mode you get an extra %, meaning you get a total of 102%. Likewise, in DKC3 completing it on hard mode, gives you a total of 105%.
