DKC Screenshot Competition: Round 1 has concluded

PostPosted: March 3rd, 2008, 11:14 am
by Qyzbud
Round 1 of our Screenshot Competition has concluded...

There were many excellent shots submitted, and I've chosen what I think to be the best and most fitting of these to be displayed on the Level Info pages. I've also added some of my own screenshots in an effort to provide a balanced representation of each level's unique features and situations.

Take a look:
Bouncy Bonanza
Stop & Go Station
Millstone Mayhem

The captions and submitters' names haven't yet been filled out, but I'll get this sorted out as soon as I get a chance.

** A big thank you to everyone who participated **

There will be prizes for those whose screenshots were chosen, but I'll have to ask you to be patient with me while I organise this!

A new round of the screenshot competition will commence shortly.
(In the meantime, feel free to get a head start by collecting your best snaps of Vine Valley's first few levels.) :)

May 18th's post:
Spoiler!
Finally, the competition begins!

DKC Atlas is calling on its members and visitors (visitors, please sign up!) to send in their best screenshots for the following levels:

Bouncy Bonanza
Stop & Go Station
Millstone Mayhem

Suggestions for taking screenshots:
  • Scenes of 'normal play' are preferred. Glitches and hacks are not to be featured in this competition.
  • Effort should be made to capture the unique essence of the level, so that the pictured scenario clearly belongs to the level it was taken in.
  • Composition and balance are important - make sure that your screenshot is nice to look at.
Submission guidelines:
  • Submissions can include any number of screenshots; from just one screenshot to as many as 12 (up to four from each chosen level).
  • All screenshots are to be submitted as unmodified, 256 by 224 pixel PNG files. (Up-scaled images and BMP files are bulky and unnecessary)
  • Please include the name of the emulator you used, when you post submissions. (I've not found a 'perfect' emulator to recommend for screenshots yet...)
  • Only zip your screenshots if submitting more than six at a time.

The competition is open until midnight (your local time) next Sunday, 18 May.
Prizes will be announced soon!

Time remaining: [countdown=05/17/2008 11:59 PM]Competition Closed[/countdown]

Note: Screenshot submissions for other levels are still welcome in this thread, but will not be included as part of this competition.

March 3rd's post:
Spoiler!
Hi guys. This topic is in regards to the original DKC game. Similar topics for DKC2 and DKC3 will come later.

As you have no doubt noticed, I have been placing screenshots for each of the DKC levels on the Level Info pages of DKC Atlas.

Now, I could go through the game myself, taking a dozen or so snapshots of interesting level scenes... but really, wouldn't it be more fun if you all got involved? I think it would indeed. So without further adieu...

Post your best in-level DKC screenshots here!

I'll let you decide what 'best' means, but I suggest that you aim to show any unique parts of the level.

I'd like to end up with screenshots from a variety of levels (eventually all of them, I hope!), so if there are already a bunch of good shots for one level, pick a different one! Of course, if you think you can take better screenshots for a level that has already been represented, go for it. ;)

The best ones might well make it onto the site, and you can be a part of DKC Atlas history.

I will also be picking one single screenshot to symbolise each level as distinctly as possible (see the polaroid photo on the Jungle Hijinxs page).

Rules:
  • No more than 4 screenshots per level for each post, and no more than 8 screens total per post.
  • Please take/post all screenshots in PNG format.

I will add any rules that I think of later.

Happy snapping!

:D

Edit: Fine, Qyzbud. They weren't good enough clumped together - you're totally right, they should be spaced apart like that. :P

Hahaha, as if you noticed. :D I'm impressed.

Sorry, I actually just wanted to see how they were displayed... it was research moreso than me being finnicky.

Good shots though, thanks for that! Let's see if anyone else can compete... ;)

Use the emulator's screen shot function, not print screen.
EDIT: To do that, just hit F1 while playing and select "IMAGE FORMAT" and make sure this is set to .PNG, then to do a screenshot select "SAVE SCREENSHOT" in this same menu.

For Barrel Cannon Canyon:
Donkey Kong Country V1.0_00000.png
Donkey Kong Country V1.0_00000.png (23.56 KiB) Viewed 119787 times

That particular screen shot was difficult to get; you have to time your barrel blasts just right.

No. That does not happen without cheats/glitches (or you pasted pictures together).

I don't think Qyz wants to use glitches for the screenshots... :?:

Hrm, I'm still undecided on this one. Maybe I'll have another gallery for glitch screens, or just have them next to the glitches on the level pages & main glitches section... Yeah, not focussing on glitches for this thread, thanks guys.

I used the glitche I mentioned a while back that lets you take any animal buddy to any level. Then I used the "Hover" PAR code to float on air, thus standing on the barrel...

...ta-da? :|

Qyz said to make it interesting!

And yeah, definitely no PAR cheats. Even if I decide glitches are okay.

Alright, bumping this back up again and stickying it for the good of everyone.

Asking everyone to get some screens for three levels. 12 screenshots are needed at least, more if we can get them... we'll see if they can go up with Qyz's next level update.

So, 4 screenshots for Bouncy Bonanza, Stop 'n' Go Station and Millstone Mayhem each.

Again, unique features of the levels. Bonus room location hints are good, but be creative and make use of the level's unique aspects. It'd be really great if we could work out a nicer incentive for these sorts of comps... not really sure what Qyz'd be able to do for that, but just something to coax people into coughing up some shots. Suggestions would help, but it depends on what's able to be coded into the forums. I'm not too sure about phpbb boards.

Anyway... I'll stick a deadline on it for the sake of procrastinators; get all screens up by Sunday the 18th. Thankies. ^_^

Wow, that's some blindingly impressive initiative, right there! Kowz for Mod of the Week. ;)

I was thinking that the 'photographer' could have his/her name beneath the screenshot, and could either nominate their own idea for a caption, or we could have separate discussions about that once winners are chosen. Heh, maybe even a separate contest for the 'best caption' for each winning screenshot. This could be fun; I'll have to think of some prizes... do luxury ocean cruises and jungle safaris sound okay? Well those might be tricky to fund, but when it comes to having me code in some attractive extras for winners on the forum here; phpBB is highly flexible, so the sky's the limit. Maybe I can start to allow the use of signatures for top contributors, just for starters...

Anyhow, great idea Kowz, and well executed. I'll edit the first post to help bring this thread up to speed.

Qyzbud wrote: Maybe I can start to allow the use of signatures for top contributors, just for starters...

Ah! That's an idea. Awarding sigs or special ranks etc to people who continue to service the site sounds cool.

There needs to be some sort of small award for people as an incentive for helping on the occasion. Some other forums I've been to have used forum currency as an incentive which you can use later to buy certain things, but I'm not sure about what we'd offer for sale just yet... :/

I'll keep thinking about it, though. :)

Edit: Lol at the captions for the uploaded screens... never noticed them, when did you put them in? "Snakes in a pit" should become the next hit box office movie now... sequel to snakes on a train. 8-)

So do we add our name to the screenshot as a signiture when we submit it? Or will it just be text put under it after we win?

I read that post of yours carefully three times, and still can't work out exactly what you're asking...

If you are asking whether I want you to actually edit the screenshot to display your name; NO. Certainly not. As you can see on the Level Info pages, most screenshots currently have a caption and a number (for example: 2 of 4) displayed beneath them when clicked on/viewed. Your name would appear in this area also, as text.

Hope that clears things up...

I'm sure you would be great at captioning, Joe Mango.

Kong-Fu, thanks for contributing, but I'll mention a few words of guidance here (and will add them to post #1 for everyone's sake):
  • All screenshots are to be submitted as unmodified, 256 by 224 pixel PNG files. (Up-scaled images and BMP files are bulky and unnecessary)
  • Please include the name of the emulator you used, when you post submissions. (I've not found a 'perfect' emulator to recommend for screenshots yet...)
  • Only zip your screenshots if submitting more than six at a time. (you did the right thing with this point)
Remember; submissions can be just one screenshot, or as many as 12 (four from each chosen level).

I did resize them. I wanted to make them bigger so I wouldn't be critisized for making them small.
Qyzbud wrote:(I've not found a 'perfect' emulator to recommend for screenshots yet...)

I used ZSNES and before I resized them, they were exactly 256 by 224 pixel. You have the choice of saving them as PNGs or BMPs.

Should I fix it and reupload it?

Fixed

Qyz says: Erm, not really... Those files appear to be resized versions of your last upload. The 'double resizing' effect leads to a drop in clarity (pixel blurring) and a hike in file size. I'm afraid this set can't be used as a submission either. Remember, only unmodified screenshots are acceptable.

Kofu says: God, I hate being the first one to submit. :x

Stone, that last pic of yours may be useful for an article/study regarding DKC sprites (techniques/limitations etc.)

Cody, any level would be great to have screenshots for. If a level info page is lacking snaps, please prioritise those! Even levels which don't yet have their own page will need screenshots very soon, so feel free to explore. Cheers.

Screenshotting is really quite fun, but I have lots to do elsewhere, so it's great to have community contributions. :D

The first round is nearly over!

Submissions for Australia, Asia, Europe and Africa have closed now, but most of America still has a few hours left!

Thanks to all who have contributed so far; there have been some excellent submissions, and I'll work on the relevant Level Info pages today, to have their galleries updated. Once they are up for all to see, I'll edit the first post here to announce the winners, and to open the Caption Contest.
