I'd like to present my latest works!

Banana Coins: http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/3874/ln0b.png

Newest Revision of Sassy's Theme: http://www.mediafire.com/?8shshkpk51k8ywy
Newest Revision of Ice Theme http://www.mediafire.com/?h0jbb2b7rfwdh5e

It's still not sure whether the Ice song should be used for Ice Levels [my own opinion] or Sassy's Song [Submarine/Drill/Rocket transitions, Christopher's opinion], with Sassy's theme being used somewhere else or scrapped. So! What do YOU guys think? I pretty much think either one's fine but I like the song being on Ice more :P

As far as the ice theme you have goes, I definitely think more along the lines of what Simion what saying. Maybe it warrants a snowy toboggan level?

I really like your fighting the frostbite music. It feels cave like and icy to me.

Oh, and here is the soundtrack for Ecco. Obviously you're probably not going to want to listen to the entire album, but you can give it a listen if you'd like.

Somehow I missed the long-awaited post from Leo until now...

Also some serious problems in my personal life ended up pulling away slightly from the internet.

No can I help Kalango´s as before on DKC4 , unfortunately.

Maybe someday I'll resume it all (Maybe when I retire and turn an old useless ahaha)
But I really like this forum and occasionally give a quick look to see how everything is going.

It's good to hear from you, even if it's with sad news... I hope things are better for you now, or are at least improving a bit.

Thanks for the kind words, and for all of the personality and creativity you have brought to the community here. Best of luck with whatever you decide to do! Hopefully you'll find a chance to work on your projects again — even if you have to wait until you're "old and useless", haha.

I'll be spriting at the very least, the drill. It's for Mine Menace, the second transitional level.

These are great! Creative designs, and nicely drawn... some amusing names, too. :p

Christopher has now sketched up the Krem-Eye

Based on the Goldeneye from James Bond :D

Another nice idea; plus, GoldenEye is one of my favourite movies, so I strongly approve. ;)

And I'VE got a coupla new songs.
Eye of the Storm [Says drifting on Kongerest, is going to be used for the Krem-Eye]: http://www.mediafire.com/?al4c79p8el8nj7g
Sassy Kong's Sonata [Says ice levels, is going to be used for Sassy's Transitions]: http://www.mediafire.com/?34vcy4yeeuabfen

Oh wow, I love Eye of the Storm... great atmosphere and sample choice... those synths and the guitar go beautifully together in this piece. I was dubious of such a long track with a 15+MB filesize, but this track deserves every byte and every second... in fact, I wish there was more to hear! Bravo!

Note: Please make sure to keep track of "borrowed" music/soundscapes you use, and share that information here so that we can all appreciate the contribution of the original artist, too.

Oh, and the drill I said I was gonna sprite?
It's done.

Nice work here, too — you are indeed a fan of many talents.

Yep, obvious DK64 rip is obvious. I figured it's still better than using DKC2's banana coin though, a DKC64 rip with a pretty new indexed palette is at least somewhat new.

I appreciate the kind words, Qyzbud!
As far as borrowed clips, I use things from games I love [for example, Sonic 3/Knuckles and Metroid Prime/Super Metroid] and then go through my usual routine. I then grab anything I can't produce myself from http://www.freesound.org/ [such as certain sound effects, vocals and electric guitar sounds beyond a quick riff] As was the case with Eye of the Storm, I started with the plain and simple Phendrana Drifts by Kenji Yamamoto. I started off pretty well with a few sound effects and a new arrangement, but I couldn't do the riffs or that whooshwhooshwoosh sound effect all by myself so I had to use Audacity and Freesound, but I COULD do the jingling, the simple part of the riff, and the new but basic parts of the song.

This one is my first ever remix. It's old and it's almost EXACTLY the same as the original song [Sky Chase Zone, Sonic 2] but I'm kinda proud of it.
http://www.mediafire.com/download/9cr6x ... y_High.mp3
Christopher and I are discussing this one, and we've decided so far that perhaps it'll be used in those cloud levels.

So I'm going to start [trying] to work on Sassy's Submarine.
http://images.wikia.com/pictures/images/f/f0/Sassy% 27s_sub_inside.PNG
Shouldn't be too hard if I use DKC3 and DKC1's sprites to frankensprite it. And the theme for these lovely transitions levels have gotten one more mix...
http://www.mediafire.com/download/m72c5 ... oke%5D.mp3

In DKCR's Storm Shore, the octopus complicates the phase. This sketch by Christopher Araujo is Kark Kong;
http://images.wikia.com/pictures/images ... k_Kong.PNG
He will be an obstacle in stage 3-3: Mt Frostichimp; he starts attacking and trying to crush boulders. When the player finishes the stage, there is a cutscene similar to the openings of the DKC GBA remakes, where Kark confesses that he had no idea that he was attacking DK and friends due to the blizzard.
Kark comments that he is a big fan of DK's adventures, and that he is the only ancestor of the Kongs who is still alive. His greatest enemies were the ancestors of the Kremlings, Krizzosaurus in World 1 [Kiddy's Hideout] and Serpina in World 4 [Vine Village].
http://images.wikia.com/pictures/images ... Bosses.PNG
Kark then quips that one other factor that made it difficult to see the 'intruders' was aircraft noise, and he says something about the young genius Kong; Sassy. 'That Sassy Kong must be up to another one of her shenanigans...'

Lastly, the Krocodile Krown: http://images.wikia.com/pictures/images ... wn_map.PNG

That's quite alright, hiperkalango. We all know how much HARDR life can be. In fact, it's probably the TUFST thing anyone of us has ever done. To ASAVE you some time, instead of some COLOR-like explanation of how everyone here has faced the MUSIC of your news, I'll WATER it down by simply stating that the entire Atlas understands that, in time, this game will be finished, and it will be exuberant! So in conclusion, may your work run smoothly, and may you have a MERRY time creating DKC4: The Kongs Return!

I know this may probably be out of left field but 'I've decided to try my hand at composing music for DKC4 not being much of a fan of the original music. No offense to the composers of course i'm extremely novice myself. So here's a few tracks I've been in the progress of making. The songs are WIPs and none of these tracks are completed aside from "Industrial Stage" mostly. The songs are edited to end with a death version and goal version after.

Crystal Stage (DKC4's Crystal Level rearranged somewhat): https://app.box.com/s/yie7ttx9g390vejcpleu

Galleon Stage (I know something is obviously missing...): https://app.box.com/s/7lwqrqlkq866m3l726g0

Industrial Stage: https://app.box.com/s/odg1mkr8ui2pdtz436hk

The industrial one sounds more like a techno-computerized-industrial theme than a purely industrial one. Could use some work and/or fleshing out, but great so far. :)

Someone totally needs to do up a steampunk styled power plant level with tons of active machinery in the background and the level itself (think greasy brass gears/elements/etc. inside a basement). That would be totally awesome. B/

HiperKalango, you're doing great! Keep it up and don't forget to enjoy the ride. It's an ambitious project, but one I think you can do something great with. I may not know anything about creating fangames,
but I can understand things pulling you down. Don't worry, things happen and don't let our uber excitement for the project make you feel rushed, take your time.

Nice tunes, !!!!!; all of them appeal to me, and most feel like they could fit nicely into the DKC world. :)

  • Crystal Stage feels like it could also fit in nicely as a jungle track, or potentially somewhere of high altitude — like DKC3's cliff stages, for instance. This piece has a mellow, low-tempo pace; perhaps it's most suitable for early/easy levels?
  • Galleon Stage reminds me a lot of Northern Hemispheres — the snow/mountain theme from DKC. Has a darker and intriguing sound... I think overall I get a "dark ice cave" vibe from it — Slip Slide Ride meets Torchlight Trouble, perhaps?
  • Industrial Stage probably matches its name best of the four tracks, in my opinion — it seems somewhat inspired by DKC's factory theme, but brings other industrial (and non-industrial) elements into play as well.
  • Atmospheric Stage gives me a "village by the forest/sea" vibe — really cheery and contemplative. It actually reminds me of something out of JRPGs like Chrono Trigger or Secret of Mana — not a bad thing, but not necessarily a DKC feel.

Very enjoyable set of WIPs; you're making me want to get back into composing/remixing! :nicework:

I was trying to stay away from a completely digital sound, DK always needs some type of natural element in the music and I wanted to make it enjoyable and not just fitting in that single environment only. Yeah the mix is pretty flat so I'll fix that when I'm satisfied with the song's result. A steampunk factory would be a nice change of trope and now that i think about it, Industrial goes pretty well with that.

Crystal Stage is really WIP. For this song and Galleon I wanted to get the feeling of those very few levels in the DKC4 demo with the Crystal Stage being calm and cool like a cave stage where crystals would grow but also rhythm to give that jungle vibe. I'm probably going to redo this song alot.

With Galleon Stage, it's based off of that brief stage with the unsurvivable minecart ride. :) I intend the song to invoke the feeling of being on rigid cliffs by the sea. The song is uplifting as sea cliffs in the day are an epic sight to behold but at the same time, the bass highlights the danger traversal, and the wind bell... well its windy over here.

Industrial Stage I tried to start off on a similar vibe as Fear Factory but not so much as to outright copy it. Make it mechanical but also natural and listenable for enjoyment well actually that last one is what I want to do with all of my songs.

And finally Atmosphere Stage is tough cookie. I wanted to find a calm, nice tune similar Enchanted Forest or Stickerbush Symphony. Now that you mention it, it does remind me of "Into the Thick of It" from Secret of Mana.

For the most part I've wanted to try and steer clear of repeating often overused song tropes like how DK Island Swing was remixed to death and trying new ones and at the same time keeping the atmospheric yet catchy, "I want to hear this song again" vibe from the original trilogy.

I'm flattered that I've inspired you Qyzbud.

Here's a few jingles I've done yesterday and these are actually mixed (I'm aware they lack the DKC2 SFX before the song plays as I haven't really figured a good way to do that yet :():

The Kiddy and DK goals seem switched around to me, since Kiddy is now on drums and DK is on bass. The Kiddy one you have I can hear the bass more, and the DK one you have I can hear the drums more.

I also pretty much totally agree with Qyz on how the music seems. The first definitely feels more jungly to me.

I've updated Kiddy's goal making the bass more subtle and raised the drums on DK's goal. The crystal stage is supposed to be for a crystal jungle stage like in the demo.

Here's some tracks I've updated:

Dixie Goal v2

Kiddy Goal v2

Crystal Stage v2

Galleon Stage v2

I'm very impressed with your tunes :) I'm very curious to know how you made them, what program you used to mix and what you used to get the sounds. The music sounds very close to the original SNES music, probably the closest I've heard.

I would love to be able to make my own custom music for the DKC series, but I'm so non-musical... Maybe I'll have to teach myself... I've always wanted to make the DKL music sound like it would if it were on the SNES.

Also, DK is the one playing bass and Kiddy is the one playing drums. I don't know if you just mixed that up when you typed it before, or if I confused you!

Again, !!!!!, I love the sounds you've come up with; they all sound great, but I have to give special mention to Donkey Goal, which — no iota of exaggeration — sounds like it was produced by one of Nintendo/Rare/Retro's top sound studios. To my ears, it sounds perfect. B/

As for the other "version 2" tracks, I really wish I'd saved a copy of the original versions you shared, so I could give better feedback regarding the changes you've made. You don't happen to have the originals on hand, that you could send/link my way, do you? I've downloaded the current versions (yeah — learned my lesson!), and they're very nice; if I'm not mistaken, you've incorporated more medly/cameo tunage in these versions (especially Galleon Stage — with essence of DKC's Treetop Rock, DKC2's mine theme, etc.). It's nice to hear those familiar tunes (and you've used them well), but it does start to make your compositions a little less original.

Still, either way, they sound wonderful. :D

Also, regarding the DK/Kiddy/bass/drums confusion, I think I can help clear this up...

Phyre's pointing out that in this game (The Kongs Return), DK plays a bass guitar when he completes a level, while Kiddy plays a drum kit:

Note: Animations are hyperlinked to the post they belong to.

So, although they both sound great (and perfectly suit the original games), the instrumentation of those two tracks doesn't match this game's visual/conceptual design for the characters.

I've been using FL Studio and the Korg M1 synthesizer (i'm using a digital VST not an actual synthesizer) which is what I've learned Dave Wise and the music crew sampled from for the original trilogy.

Compared to Rare... but being compared to Retro makes me think I've dropped the ball pretty hard. :shakehead: But perhaps that is for another thread...

Unfortunately, I've overwritten the older versions of the songs. However, the unused parts and parts used in an older version of the song such as the second part of the old crystal stage song are saved within the source. With the jingles, I've mostly panned instruments, doubled guitars in Dixie's Goal and in DK's Goal added another trumpet to go along with the brass are pretty much the significant changes that I can think of.

With the stage tracks, the only cameos that I recall is the Aquatic Ambience bit right at the end Galleon Stage and something similar to Mining Melancholy's breakdown at the end of Crystal Stage which I'll change. Any other cameos are unintentional like Treetop Bop (not sure where that one is) or anything else.

Phyreburnz wrote:Also, DK is the one playing bass and Kiddy is the one playing drums. I don't know if you just mixed that up when you typed it before, or if I confused you!

Ok I got it. I accidentally mixed those up with how the music sounded instead. I didn't even know Phyre made those animations for the game. I just went by the music that was in the original demo. So I take it, big on drums with Kiddy and on guitar with Donkey? Now I'm gonna have to figure out how to add rock in DK's Goal... :O

For me, it's been quite difficult to come up with original music (these songs are literally the beginning of me "composing" music and I've been doing it the hard way, writing the melody then figuring everything else after, while at the same time trying to set a high standard) and finishing stuff (such as Atmospheric Stage) so I bring more WIPs I done during and recently.

Sounds like a match made in heaven, to me — no wonder you've produced such fitting and enjoyable tunes so far. :)

Edit: That said, I've heard numerous references over the years regarding David Wise's use of (or more accurately, his inspiration from) the Korg Wavestation, but never the M1... now, I'm not sure how significant the differences are between these two synths, but perhaps there's an even more Wise-like VST out there? :geek:

Well, I'm sure you know that wasn't the impression I intended to give; I really enjoy what Retro have done with the DKC series. Personally, I love the music of 'Returns — especially the tributes to the original compositions of David Wise and Eveline Novakovic (née Fischer). I'm not sure why you dislike the 'Returns soundtrack — if that's even what you're implying — but yes, that is indeed a discussion for a different topic. I'm interested to hear your thoughts, and those of others, so I may even start a topic for that, if need be.

!!!!! wrote:With the stage tracks, the only cameos that I recall is the Aquatic Ambience bit right at the end Galleon Stage and something similar to Mining Melancholy's breakdown at the end of Crystal Stage which I'll change. Any other cameos are unintentional like Treetop Bop (not sure where that one is) or anything else.

The bit starting at 0:53 in your Crystal Stage composition is where I noticed what I thought was a Treetop Bop Rock* reference; it's not the full melody — just a handful of key notes.

Spoiler!

Skip to 0:27 for the bit I mean.

The new tracks are nice. Sand/Ruin Stage certainly gives off a Arabesque desert vibe. 8-)

This is a sample of the engine to release the Partner of the barrels DKs
based on the engine and Necrotoad Leocore basically we worked on it 3. It has 2 modes, normal mode and the mode with Cheat Partner (I will not divulge the códio for now hehehe)
And finally the engine collision Krems in loss of life
Hope you enjoy ....

Very cool, Hyper K...

You guys are definitely taking what Rare created and running with it beautifully! It's amazing to see the four Kongs all trekking through a level together, and it looks really polished!

:nicework:

A shoutout to Phyreburnz for the excellent spriting work — DK's horizontal rope traversal looks positively smashing!

Keep up the excellent work, guys. 8-)

Yeah I dislike the music of Returns especially the not-remixes and new Bonus Blitz. But that can be discussed elsewhere.

I see the comparison now. I'll probably rearrange those notes just to differentiate it from Treetop Bop.

The engine is shaping up nicely. Though I can see that the DK Barrel character pick SFX may annoy some. Good job on that DK climbing animation Phyreburnz, for a moment I thought it was a legit unused animation.

Some more tracks:
Relic Rhythm (Sand Stage): https://app.box.com/s/b1jducp4t3de3ksjffkc
Riveting Reef (Underwater Stage - small error fixed): https://app.box.com/s/ewt51evcqx3wr4ezcov4
Savannah Sonata (Savannah Stage Demo - Very Brief): https://app.box.com/s/v5iy8one3unkwnlr84yn
I only just composed Riveting Reef only a mere few hours ago. I'm impressed how close to a complete song it currently sounds.

Some more tracks:
Candy's Love Song
-Couldn't think up a good original song for Candy so I arranged and tweaked the original instead. I've provided the crappy original track I had below.
Candy's Theme old

Furnace Furioso (Blast Furnace Stage)
-A song intended for a Blast Furnace/Industrial trope stage that could work for a lava stage. I intended to have a funky guitar (à la in this style Wario Land Shake It - Mt. Lava Lava) play the riff you'll hear right from the beginning; a distorted guitar currently occupies those notes.

King of the Jungle (Jungle Stage)

A lot of those look like they are just rips from other games. How were they made, are they just taken from some other games?

Quite a large amount of those backgrounds are from Super Mario 64. :mario:

I guess that's alright though, because it appears that you reduced the amount of colours in them, so they could fit with the normal DKC backgrounds.
