The many changes in DKC's GBA port...

Talk about the Donkey Kong Country ports for GBC and GBA.

The many changes in DKC's GBA port...

Postby Kiddy14 » December 17th, 2008, 12:07 pm

There are many things in the GBA port of DKC that were changed, mainly because the game wasn't really ported, but re-written to GBA capabilities.

For example, the warp from Vulture Culture wasn't added in the port, which is the most known change Rareware made.

But just today I noticed something, which apparently the GBA team also wasn't aware of... that Queen B. is a she :|

If you beat Queen B, Cranky would appear and tell you:

"Well, you told him to buzz off. You looked in trouble for a while."

If I remember correctly, Rare added a warp in Coral Capers. I'm sure that's NOT in the SNES version.

The music was changed in Funky's place and in Treetop Town. Probably more places too but I'm not sure.

Are you sure it was Coral Capers? I know there was a warp in Reptile Rumble that wasn't in the SNES version, but Coral Capers? An underwater level?

Yeah, it's in one of the hidden (go through the wall) areas. There's a lot of bananas and the warp barrel is at one of the corners in the area.

There's an easy explanation for the Queen B. thing. Somewhere between the SNES version and GBA version, Queen B. became a boy.

Maybe Cranky just didn't know the bee was a queen.

The GBA version has warps for (from the top of my head):
Jungle Hijinx
Ropey Rampage
Reptile Rumble
Coral Capers
Barrel Cannon Canyon
Winky's Walkway
Mine Cart Carnage
Bouncy Bonanza
Stop & Go Station
Millstone Mayhem
Trick Track Trek

  • The title theme doesn't have the 8-bit DK Arcade intro.
  • The forest and tree village themes are rearranged from the SNES versions.
  • The themes for Funky and Candy are completely changed to different songs.
  • An opening sequence explaining the story has been added.
  • All boss strategies except K. Rool have changed.
  • The scenes in the ending where Cranky talks to you and the cast of characters comes up take place entirely on K. Rool's ship.
  • Donkey Kong never returns to the banana hoard at any point in the ending, yet the text where Cranky tells him to go back there for a surprise remains.
  • The text where Cranky congratulates you for finding everything completely replaces everything he says in the ending, not just the part where he tells you that you haven't found everything.
  • Two Mankey Kongs throw barrels at each other in the cast of characters.
  • The cast of characters does not cover K. Rool or any of the Kongs.
  • A new ending scene has been added between the cast of characters and the credits.

Biggest difference:
SNES version is good, GBA version isn't.

^ QFT.

But while we're at it, K. Rool had several frames restored to his existing animation, most noticeable in his crown-throwing and idling animation. This applies to some other characters, like the Kritters now tumbling end-over-end in a full cycle when defeated.

You can find the Gnawty bosses in DK's treehouse after you beat them. I'm pretty sure that wasn't in the SNES version. I don't know, I haven't played either in a while.

Bump! While I agree that the SNES version is better, without the GBA version I would probably have never been introduced to DKC. I got that for Christmas one year and I could NOT put the thing down! I think it's a decent port!

There is another typo in the game. This time, it is when Cranky talks after Master Necky and Master Necky Snr. are both defeated:

Image

I'm going to highlight the spelling mistake in Cranky's quote and explain why it's a typo: "reusing the boss, changing it's color".

!WARNING: LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON BELOW!
This is an example of an "its"/"it's" confusion, one of the many common mistakes in the English writing. "It's" is a contraction of either "it is" or "it has" (depends on the sentence context), so Cranky is essentially saying "changing it has color". The reason why I stated that he said "it has" is because he is referring to video games from his generation. It should say, "changing its color", because the word "its" is used to describe an association or belonging to specific objects, animals, etc.
LESSON FINISHED. Phew, I geeked out...

I do think that this post could be relocated to this topic, if Qyzbud prefers it here: http://www.dkc-atlas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1851

Oh my, that is horrible! We can't have lesser grammer in skool!

Anyway, in the SNES version of poison pond, right after the midway barrel there is a curved trail of bananas. If you continue to the right you find an Enguarde box. In the SNES version, there is a Bitesize that will "kindly" pop out from behind some foreground seaweed and hit you. In the GBA version it isn't there!

I noticed this because I suck at remembering enemy placements

What's more intresting is the Ability-Switching Barrel glitch. This glitch is new and with this glitch, you can make Diddy beat Krusha with a jump and Donkey Kong cannot beat Krusha with a jump

What?! That’s Weird! Either way I think DKC on the GBA was a lot better than Donkey Kong Land! :parry:
