The Koin Off-Screen Trick

This glitch allows you to kill Koin off-screen. It works in both versions of DKC3, and it also sorta works in DKL3 as well (but not quite as well). In DKC3, take a steel barrel and and throw it to Koin when he's off-screen. Because he's off-screen, the barrel won't hit him, even though the barrel is still present. You can let the barrel bounce off a wall and let it bounce back. At this point, you want to move towards Koin so that the barrel will hit Koin right when he appears. If the barrel touches Koin right when he appears, Koin will be defeated and you can get the DK coin. Also, sometimes you don't even need to make the barrel bounce back either.

Like I said, this also kinda works in DKL3, but it's a little different. Here, Koin has to be WAY off the screen for this to work (a little less than a screen's length away), and when the barrel touches Koin when the game recognizes that Koin is there, he'll just deflect it. So you want to make Koin appear BEFORE the barrel hits him.

Here are some videos that show this trick:

I wonder why it happens in the GBA version. I mean, in the SNES it was used to save game memory, Koin would only appear when he is on-screen, while the barrel can be further off the screen and it would be still in the game's memory (most likely used when the wall the barrel has to hit to bounce on Koin is far away, like Murky Mill's). But the GBA can actually have Koin off-screen still present, much like DKLIII. GBA Criss-Kross Cliffs' Buzzes can be far away from the screen and you can still hear the barrels bouncing on it, and then the TNT's killing it.

Well documented, and very thorough. Thanks for all of those video references.

What surprises me most is that the GBA version allows a well timed/placed TNT blast to defeat Koin... I thought the whole point was that he had to be taken off-guard with a hit from a steel keg - no exceptions! Looks like exceptions do exist. By the way, Kaboom is a DKC2 name; some of us have started calling the GBA DKC3's running TNT barrels 'Knockabooms', though... take it or leave it. ;)

The trick is quite nice, indeed. It saves some time in speedrunning. Anything that makes is good! :)
