I don't know where to put this, but here are the two trailers for the Super Mario Bros. movie that releases next April. The second one is new and has many people we know.

Spoiler!

Despite all the complainers, I'm looking forward to seeing this on its opening weekend!

My main gripe with the second trailer is that we don't get to hear D.K. or Cranky speak at all. Surely they wouldn't have hired Seth Rogen and Fred Armisen to just make ape sounds?

I know this has been said numerous times across the Web, but with as much effort as has been put into these cameos, I wouldn't be surprised if Illumination made a Donkey Kong spinoff in the future. I wonder who they'd cast as King K. Rool?

Now that I've seen the movie, here are my thoughts: It's great. Although the runtime is a tad short, I don't mind, and recognizing most of the references made the movie even better to watch, although I don't think that's necessary. The Donkey Kong area was probably my favorite for many reasons that I won't spoil, but I indeed saw the whole army of them.

I didn't know that it was out yet! We're heading over to our grandparents soon and we're going to watch it there. :parry:

Seconded! Saw this last night, and the movie cinema I went to with my sister was packed with people young and old wearing Mario gear (Before anyone asks, I had on some grey socks with Super Mario Bros. sprites on them that I received from a coworker as a gift. None of the t-shirts I have fit very well.). There were four lines leading to the concessions that nearly extended into one of the hallways leading to the theaters.

recognizing most of the references made the movie even better to watch, although I don't think that's necessary.

As a fan, I'm glad they added so many references. There are undoubtedly tons of them I missed this first time, so I look forward to what else I can catch once this releases on Blu-Ray if I don't wind up going to see it in a theater again! (Yes, it was that good!)

The Donkey Kong area was probably my favorite for many reasons that I won't spoil, but I indeed saw the whole army of them.

Again avoiding spoilers, I just want to say that I love all of the nods to the Donkey Kong series in these scenes and elsewhere.

I find this funny.

Critics are bad at what they do, it seems :) NOBODY I know agrees with critics

It seems there is no grey area. Critics either love it for being faithful to the games, or hate it for playing things too safe.

I guess I’ll have to make my own decision. I don’t like Mario that much because it’s a stereotypical video game. But I’ll probably appreciate the references. :parry:

I unfortunately didn't see Parry in the movie, Tanager, but my brother's favorite Kong appeared for two seconds, so that's something.

Parry is disappointed. But he didn't receive any contract for an endorsement either. He assumed that Nintendo had it covered. Is the kong Kiddy? :parry:

Still on the topic of Kongs in the movie, what surprised me...
Spoiler!
...is that Diddy actually has some spoken dialogue where he cheers for DK, and Cranky even calls him out by name to tell him to quiet down! I don't know if the fact that Diddy has a voice increases the likelihood that we'll see him in a sequel or spinoff (no doubt we will if it's a Donkey Kong spinoff), but it's still cool.

I didn't look for Diddy in the credits, so I don't know who provided the voice or if they are even credited.

I don't think they got the timelines right. Also, I thought it would've been cool if grant kirkhope had been dk. his voice was his in 64 except it was deepened a bit. they could've done the same thing. is he a good actor, though? did they get diddys voice right as in dkr and 64? (or maybe the cartoon too?) :parry:

I never expected an accurate timeline for the film, but I still think the movie's is close enough.

Mario doesn't really have a timeline. Rare messed things up by aging the original Donkey Kong into Cranky Kong, whereas the Mario characters haven't aged aside from being babies in the Yoshi games, and crossing paths with their older selves in Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time.

Yoshi's Island DS introduces another paradox by creating Baby Donkey Kong, who isn't Donkey Kong Junior and is the same age as the Mario Brothers.

Ok. So, are you saying that you could work the Mario timeline around the DK timeline? As in super mario bros happened during country? Or slightly before? Either way, Rare did create a timeline issue with Cranky which causes issues of DK being DK jr. Interestingly enough. :parry:

I saw the movie yesterday. I have one small nitpick Tanager pointed out.
Spoiler!
The timeline (sorta)
DK is referred to as Cranky's son. And ok, maybe he was, but then why is Diddy cheering for him?

Also, I don't like how they took out the "Let's-a-go" from the DK fight, but understand their reasoning behind removing it. Makes it mean more later.

And what's even more annoying is we don't know where Diddy fits in exactly in the family tree! :dixiehappy: :parry:

I think he's supposed to be Donkey's nephew, although probably not literally. Dixie was also shooting Diddy some mean looks, which seems uncharacteristic.

Where in the development stages was DK DK jr? In the beginning Diddy was DK jr and then he was removed from that role and Nintendo proclaimed DK not the original. Who became Cranky. I do like Cranky the way he is. His character is well-developed and perfect. Also, good news, Shigeru Miyamoto loves Cranky. As a character and as an interpretation of his original Donkey Kong. :parry:

Spoiler!
I'll finish this post, later.
Ok, as I've discussed, kongs weren't very accurate. No kong army.
Funky showed up in the kart building area.
As we know, Kiddy, Chunky, Dixie, and DK were in the stands.
Mario's dad is the mario voice from the n64 era!
The commercial according to my mom is based off of a super mario world movie from when she was a kid.
The construction site is based off of 1-1.
There's a sign that says 1-2 when they are exploring the sewer.
Music references galore from the mario games.
King Deedee, Kind Deedee, Kaptain Deedee, and Baron Deedeestein is from Kirby.
Punchout is in the window of the pizza place.
Also, I assume that is pauline being mayor.
The guy in the pizza place is playing Donkey Kong.
Spike is from a mario game.
The gamecube startup noise is Luigi's ringtone.
Mario and Luigi's house has mushroom coat hangers.
Wasn't the dark land from smb3?
The mushroom city has trees that are like the ones in the background of smw1
Yoshis running across the field.
Peach floats as in the nes game starring herself.
Fish attack mario as in the world map of smw1
donkey kong country returns entrance to a temple is the entrance to the kong world.
During mario vs dk, the stadium looks like the original arcade game.
How come Cranky doesn't know who mario/jumpman is?
The dk rap.
The kongs weren't the most realistic.
Peach and Mario chat outside of a treehouse that looks like the kong treehouse from dkcr.
Cranky has a map of the world in smw1 style.
Rainbow road, obviously.
Help me, Jumpman poster.
Cracking yoshi egg.
No grant kirkhope credit for rap or jungle japes when its used.
Did bowser actually love peach? It sounds familliar, but from where?
Dk is Cranky's Son?!?!?!
dk and cranky and diddy aren't exactly right for voicing.
Also, the kongs aren't that cocky, in my opinion.
The kongs aren't really that populous or advanced.

In my opinion, the movie was good,
Spoiler!
but the kongs weren't the most accurate.

I agree, and I noticed many of the same references you did. If a Donkey Kong movie is made, I hope we have more accurate iterations of the characters, even if they oversell certain aspects, like Diddy and Dixie being a couple. I'll accept them making out with each other if they're still the tough and thrill-seeking duo from DKC2.

Though, I like them best as the duo described in the manual of Rareware and your stories.

Also, they specifically targeted the 80s and older generation with the accompanying music. Interesting choice. The music im referencing is good though.

Yep, I remember seeing those rocket boosters on D.K.'s kart a few minutes earlier and thinking about how those looked familiar. Then that happened!

Tanager, I would recommend that you still spoiler tag your posts. The movie still hasn't been out long enough, and some people who haven't seen it yet don't want their experience to be spoiled.
