Forum feature added: User-defined # of posts per page

All members are now able to choose the number of posts they want to see per page when viewing a topic.

To set your preferred posts-per-page, click here, adjust the 'Posts per page' value at the bottom of the page, and click Submit.

The default (for guests, new members etc.) is now 20 posts per page.

Hopefully this will give everyone a bit more flexibility. :)

Note: You can adjust your posts-per-page any time by accessing your User Control Panel (UCP), then clicking Board preferences, and Edit display options.

Original post:
Spoiler!
Dear forum users,

There has been some talk about the length of topic pages, and it sounds like some people would prefer to have fewer posts per page, while others are content with how things are. Currently, a topic is viewed 50 posts at a time, with further posts available on additional pages. For users who just want to see the latest replies to a topic, and especially for those with slow connections or limited downloads, that is a lot of posts to load at once.

Ultimately, I'd like to give users the option to set their own posts-per-topic preference, but in the meantime I'd like to change to 20 posts per page, as it would suit me better at the moment, and it sounds as though others would also benefit.

What do you think?

Please indicate your thoughts by filling in the poll above, and/or posting a message below. Thanks! :)

Definitely 'adjust it myself' that way everyone is happy. People with slow connections can choose less, people with high speed can choose more so they don't have go through 10 or more pages. Win-win. ;)

I like the number of posts per page already, and would be happy to have MOAR. But...

I would definitely like to be able to Adjust the Amount myself.

Don't mess with free will, it will own you like Steamkpunk Abe Lincoln.

Adjustability sounds great, however I think until you figure that one out it's best to try out maybe 20-30 posts per page.

Well, uh, Lake Tahoe voted for you get to choose how many posts, but only 1 vote was cast. (Me) Hey, I think it's a swell idea.

 You know it's funny how it was me who "suggested" to show 50 pages instead of the previously 25...
 I only suggested it! =P But Qyz agreed it was better to let people put the amount they wanted...

I'll give 20 a shot, but a uniform thing is kinda important... Dunno why, but it seems to be in my head.

Oh no, the sudden changes are a hinderance as my refreshing isn't working out properly... Oh well, not too bad. :P

Qyz, I couldn't care less how many posts per page there are, but the ability to choose is good. Very good. :)

Hey Qyz.

The number of pages that's displayed on topics (where you click to go to a page) from a subforum do not update when you change the number of pages.

Thanks for the ability to change the posts-per-page, it might actually come in handy in a few ways. ;)

Hmm... that was weird. You say the default is 20, but I was just at 10(I didn't do that either).

Anyway, I like it at 50. I don't like people being given options, either. It sounds too weak. We should control everybody with an iron fist.

Right?

I got the lower amounts of post a few times as well, but it turns out the cookies for Atlas somehow got cleared. So I had to re-login.

No, that's wrong. This is not China, and it never will be. Others' free will is, above all things, the #1 rule that may not infringed upon. If you try to control people, it is going to backfire. You'll see why eventually... </esoteric jargon>

I really doubt a posts-per page setting is going to harm anyone. It makes the forum more versatile, and Users won't whine if they want a different amount of posts per page.

Jomingo, that would be a result of me initially setting the default to '10', before realising that I had initially stated 20... As a result, all current members would have been assigned a 10 post-per-page default (including me), but we can all change that, and all members who sign up from this point onward will have 20 as their default value, as will guests. At least that's what should happen. I'll test now.

Edit: Hmm, upon testing, it does look as though the default has stayed at 10... but I believe I will let it stay at 10.

And I do hope you're joking about not liking people having options... you will begin to resent my ongoing development approach more and more, if so.

Simion, I'm aware of the topic list pagination issue, and am planning to update this shortly. Thanks for the report though, as always.

It appears you two didn't catch the hint of sarcasm in my post. Anyway, yeah, options are good.

Yeah, I thought it was obvious you were joking.

Anyway, this'll be really great once Qyz fixes the pagination issue. Then we're ROCKIN'!!!!

I Actually thought I was just having some refreshing issures with my browser though...

It's fine to call it sarcasm now... but who knows what darkness lies in the heart of Jomingo?

Anyhow, I believe I've ironed out the pagination issues. Let me know if any issues persist. :geek:
